While the Spring of Nations holds Poland in its grip and the Russo-Turkish War in Bulgaria plays out in the background, a story full of societal upheavals unfolds. In this turbulent world, the ambitious and wealthy merchant Stanisław Wokulski attempts to navigate a labyrinth of social tensions and profound personal setbacks. His carefully built empire comes under real pressure due to an all-blinding passion for the aristocratic Izabela Łęcka. As he desperately tries to improve his position in upper circles, he is mercilessly confronted with the harsh reality of class differences and the clash with his own ideals.
