Set in the late 1950s and 1960s, this film tells the true story of Norwegian Crown Prince Harald's nine-year struggle to marry commoner Sonja Haraldsen. The Norwegian constitution prohibits the Crown Prince from marrying without royal permission, and tradition dictates that he marry a noblewoman to preserve the monarchy. Despite strong opposition from his father, King Olav V, the government, the press, and the people, Harald and Sonja fight for their right to be together.
