The five-part *The Narrow Road to the Deep North* (actually a feature-length film of over 220 minutes) is an impressive, non-classical war drama. Do not expect heroic deeds or victory strategies here. In three timelines of 1940, 1943, and 1989, we follow physician Dorrigo Evans (Jacob Elordi / Ciarán Hinds). His period as an Allied prisoner of war, in particular, during which he worked on the Burma Railway, is an intense posthumous tribute to all victims and a plea against dehumanization. In total, 90,000 to 115,000 forced laborers lost their lives, including 3,000 Dutch soldiers.
The series depicts the deplorable conditions during that period in 1943 without restraint or embellishment. That the respected doctor Dorrigo is still suffering the consequences of this in 1989 becomes understandable. This pain contrasts sharply with the innocent period of the early 1940s, full of infatuation and romantic encounters on the beach. Love conquers all, but does the Death Railway do the same? The Narrow Road to the Deep North is reminiscent of films like Apocalypse Now, The English Patient, or The Deer Hunter. Perhaps sometimes just a little too much melodrama, but without a doubt, The Narrow Road to the Deep North is a stunning manifesto against the futility of every war.
