Near the end of documentary week, I caught this World War II Frontlines and watched it quite a while back, not because it was bad or anything. On the contrary, it turned out to be a more than excellent documentary that just can't quite hold its own against the best, like The World at War from 1972.

But great, World War 2: From the Frontlines, where the question quickly arises whether I haven't already seen it all. And yes, the answer to that question is probably 90, if not 95%. But damn it, there's always something new, like the colonial troops during the Blitzkrieg in France, where even Vietnamese soldiers were among them, and the captured colonial soldiers were thoroughly examined and classified by the Germans based on skin color, eyes, and plaster casts of their faces. Truly remarkable footage.

But it doesn't stop there, of course, and even the footage I've seen many times is impressive in its polished, colorized form. The footage of the Russian parade is magnificent, as is the footage of Tarawa, where I eagerly await Iwo Jima, the mother of all battlefields and massacres, if it were up to me. But unfortunately, Iwo isn't touched upon, which I find a great pity, but not insurmountable. We even have Dick Best speaking briefly, who is nothing like the caricature Ed Skrein portrays in Midway.

Finally, it's striking how easily eyewitnesses still overreact so many years later, especially when it comes to civilians. Furthermore, it creates a concise and general picture, while other documentaries like The World At War offer a much broader perspective and contain far more information. It's clear that the filmmakers rely primarily on the restored footage, which is more than excellent and deserves a good pass mark.
