The Madison, by multi-talented Taylor Sheridan (known for Mayor of Kingstown and Yellowstone), is best described as a mix of neo-western and romantic drama. As we have come to expect from Sheridan, the story is told with a firm, sometimes not-so-subtle hand. The script is fast-paced and the acting is solid. Every now and then, a surprising plot twist appears as if conjured straight from a cowboy hat. The breathtaking scenery of the Madison River Valley in Montana alone will hold great appeal for many viewers. And rightly so.
However, this first season has clear shortcomings. Virtually all the characters come across as spoiled, unsympathetic, and quite one-dimensional — even matriarch Stacy, played by Michelle Pfeiffer. The story largely remains on the surface and rarely seeks genuine nuance or emotional depth. Sheridan still excels at creating a strong, cinematic atmosphere, but the whole would gain strength with a more convincing story and more complex characters.
