Jolanta Wadowska-Król is a young doctor living near a factory. She discovers that children near the Szopienice steelworks are suffering from lead syndrome, a disease caused by heavy metal poisoning. After her discovery, she tries to save the sick children and comes into conflict with the oppressive communist state apparatus, jeopardizing her career and safety.

Olowiane Dzieci (Lead Children) is een krachtig zesdelig Pools drama. De thematiek is vergelijkbaar met Toxic Town en de speelfilms Erin Brockovich en Dark Waters en vertelt het verhaal van jonge kinderen die op onverklaarbare wijze ernstig ziek worden. Tegen de achtergrond van het Polen in de jaren 70 en 80, speelt staatscontrole, bureaucratie, politieke druk en de innige vriendschap met de communistische Sovjet Unie van Leonid Breznjev een belangrijke rol. De sfeertekening en het tijdsbeeld van de industriële provincie Silezië zijn uitstekend getroffen. Met hoge productiewaarden ziet Olowiane Dzieci er fantastisch uit. Met een waargebeurd gedramatiseerd verhaal dat prettig wegkijkt en acteurs die weten te overtuigen, valt de serie positief op in het oneindige Netflix-aanbod. Olowiane Dzieci is geen fossiel historisch drama, maar - denk aan Tata Steel - pijnlijk actueel. Is er nog hoop voor ecocide?
