Beter Wordt het Niet plot

David (28) gives up his lease and emigrates to his girlfriend Eva in Berlin. A romantic gesture, but she has had enough of his lack of sense of reality and breaks up with him immediately. David decides to build a new life in the challenging and sometimes downright strange German capital. He contacts his Flemish girlfriend Aisha, finds a room with the eccentric Norwegian Rob and falls in love with the cynical German Hanna. He finds a job and meets all kinds of Berlin types. But with all these (mis)steps the question is: is David making the same mistakes, or is he finally growing up?

Hoofdpersoon David (Rein Mulder) vertrekt vol verwachting naar Berlijn om zijn vriendin te ontmoeten en zich daar te vestigen. Nadat zijn vriendin de relatie beëindigt is David aangewezen op zichzelf en baant zich een weg door Berlijn, de experimentele kunst en het nachtleven. Het leidt tot een verzameling bijzondere, ongemakkelijke en vervreemdende ontmoetingen die je gerust licht absurdistisch mag noemen. Grootste probleem van de 10-delige Nederlandse comedy Beter Wordt Het Niet is dat - op een enkele geestigheid na - de serie maar niet grappig wil worden en voortdurend een gekunstelde indruk wekt. De experimenten zoals in aflevering 5, lijken er puur voor de vorm te zijn en halen het tempo uit de toch al trage verhandelingen. Beter wordt het niet, ook niet in het tweede deel. Stilistisch ligt de vergelijking met Bodem voor de hand, eveneens met een uitermate ergerniswekkende hoofdpersoon. Het hoge niveau van Bodem wordt in Beter Wordt Het Niet nergens gehaald. De droge en ongemakkelijke humor komt niet goed uit de verf, en wordt niet van context voorzien door meer dramatische subplots. De serie komt zo niet verder dan sympathieke bedoelingen, en blijft pijnlijk hangen in filmisch niemandsland. De beste rol is voor de stad Berlijn. Voor een comedy is dat geen goed teken.

Main character David (Rein Mulder) leaves for Berlin full of expectations to meet his girlfriend and settle there. After his girlfriend ends the relationship, David is left to his own devices and makes his way through Berlin, its experimental art and nightlife. It leads to a collection of special, uncomfortable and alienating encounters that you can safely call slightly absurd.

The biggest problem with the 10-part Dutch comedy Beter Wordt Het Niet is that - apart from a few witticisms - the series just doesn't seem to want to be funny and constantly gives an artificial impression. The experiments, such as in episode 5, seem to be there purely for form's sake and take the pace out of the already slow dissertations. It doesn't get any better, not even in the second part. Stylistically, the comparison with Bodem is obvious, also with an extremely annoying main character. The high level of Bodem is never reached in Beter Wordt Het Niet.

The dry and awkward humor doesn't really come across well, and isn't given context by more dramatic subplots. The series doesn't get any further than sympathetic intentions, and remains painfully stuck in cinematic no-man's land. The best role is for the city of Berlin. For a comedy, that's not a good sign.

Het was vermakelijk om naar te kijken maar ik had ook de hele tijd het idee dat het nog niet helemaal af was. Kwam toch niet helemaal van de grond, soms komen dingen wel heel erg uit de lucht vallen en mist het context en samenhang. Ik heb het idee dat ze naar Atlanta van Donald Glover hebben gekeken, maar dat niveau halen ze bij lange na niet. En David als 28 jarige is helaas niet geloofwaardig.

It was entertaining to watch, but I also had the feeling the whole time that it wasn't quite finished. It didn't quite get off the ground, sometimes things just seem so out of the blue, and it lacks context and coherence. I get the feeling they watched Donald Glover's Atlanta, but they're nowhere near that level. And David, at 28, is unfortunately not credible.
