A Murder Costs More Lives is a four-part miniseries based on the 1994 book of the same name by Peter R. de Vries. Videoland is fully committed to it with a major marketing campaign. That is special because there are still some things wrong with this true crime series. The first two messy episodes are full of flashbacks and a reconstruction. With flashbacks. A Murder Costs More Lives thus becomes a long, drawn-out repetition exercise that manages to put the viewer to sleep.
Episodes three and four are more prison drama, without too much drama, with routine acting from leads Chris Peters and Jacob Derwig. The makers stated that they wanted to adapt the intense book by Peter R. de Vries into an accessible film. That was undoubtedly successful. At the same time, A Murder Costs More Lives is distant, fragmentary and superficial. Perhaps the interesting and complex premise - can you, as a child, escape the leaden burden of a father as a child murderer - deserves more than four short episodes.
