Santos plot

Love couple Glenn and Yola try to build a life together in Rotterdam. Although they both want to pursue their dreams, they find themselves stuck between their own ambitions and their criminal friends and family. Aspiring chef Glenn is dragged along by his dealing best friend Jermaine and non-profit entrepreneur Yola comes into conflict with her criminal mother, who ruthlessly seizes power in the port of Rotterdam. Yola and Glenn try to make the right choice separately and together in a world that looks at them through colored glasses. But what is the right choice when it comes to family, friends and love? The choices are becoming increasingly complex and their consequences increasingly greater. Does this drive Glenn and Yola apart or is their love indestructible?

Santos is een achtdelige Rotterdamse Surinarcos met Kaapverdische invloeden en draait om via de haven ingevoerde pekkies. Een handelslijn vakkundig georganiseerd door maffiafamilie Dos Santos. Mater familias Erveline Dos Santos - een uitstekende Romana Vrede - richt zich vooral op het netwerken, haar twee zonen knappen het vuile werk op. Centraal staat liefdeskoppel Yola Dos Santos (Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing) en Glenn (Yannick Jozefzoon), die tegen de stroom in van verkeerde vrienden en familie een bestaan proberen op te bouwen. Hoewel de makers hun sporen verdiend hebben als regisseurs en schrijvers van Penoza en Mocro Maffia, is Santos meer een drama dan een spannende narcothriller. In de eerste sterke afleveringen - er is nog weinig aan de hand voor het verliefde stel - valt de prachtige fotografie in warme kleuren op. De laatste afleveringen worden geforceerd spannend gemaakt, en missen overtuigingskracht en geloofwaardigheid. Verwacht in Santos gure havenloodsen, foute horeca en ongure types, maar geen keiharde actie of geweldsexplosies. Wat resteert is een redelijk overtuigend verhaal over vriendschap, loyaliteit en trouw aan jezelf. Of zoals regisseur Ivan Barbosa het zelf zegt: 'niet elke crimineel wil een crimineel zijn.'

Santos is an eight-part Rotterdam Surinarcos with Cape Verdean influences and revolves around pekkies imported through the port. A trade line expertly organized by the Dos Santos mafia family. Mater familias Erveline Dos Santos - an excellent Romana Vrede - focuses mainly on networking, her two sons do the dirty work.

The focus is on love couple Yola Dos Santos (Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing) and Glenn (Yannick Jozefzoon), who try to build a life against the tide of wrong friends and family. Although the makers have made their mark as directors and writers of Penoza and Mocro Mafia, Santos is more of a drama than a suspenseful narcotic thriller.

In the first strong episodes - there is little going on for the couple in love - the beautiful photography in warm colors is striking. The final episodes are made with forced suspense and lack conviction and credibility. Expect bleak harbor sheds, bad restaurants and unsavory types in Santos, but no hard action or explosions of violence. What remains is a fairly convincing story about friendship, loyalty and being true to yourself. Or as director Ivan Barbosa himself says: 'not every criminal wants to be a criminal.'

Frisse acteurs van kleur en een puike sfeerschets van de Kaapverdiaanse/Surinaamse subcultuur in Rotterdam. De havenstad wordt op de kaart gezet zoals 'The Wire' deed met Baltimore of 'The Sopranos' met New Jersey. Toch krijgt het nergens de authenticiteit of nuance van zulke betere series. Net als Erveline Dos Santos (Romana Vrede) zelf wil 'Santos' grootser en meeslepender zijn dan het eigenlijk is. Met een bespottelijke slotakte waarin alle geloofwaardigheid overboord wordt gegooid voor theatrale overdaad.
