Vigil plot

The nuclear submarine HMS Vigil is patrolling British waters from an undisclosed location, ready to defend the country and ready to launch a thermonuclear warhead in case of danger. When a crew member is found dead on board, Police Detective Amy Silva is tasked with investigating whether there is more to death than an apparent heroin overdose. Silva suspects so and boards the nuclear submarine to interview everyone and search for clues.

The second season of the British thriller drama Vigil has a messy plot, but remains gripping. Vigil is written by Tom Edge, who previously wrote episodes for Strike and The Crown. This time, instead of a submarine for DCI Amy Silver (Suranne Jones), it's an international case at an air base in the fictional Middle Eastern city of Wudyan.

Silver is supported in this by her associate and life partner, DI Kirstin Longacre (Rose Leslie). It's a somewhat complicated setup, partly because Longacre is seven months pregnant. The relationship between Silver and Longacre is less credible—the age difference, the power dynamic, and little chemistry—especially because Longacre exposes herself to significant dangers. Taking it easy during pregnancy takes on a whole new dimension in Vigil.

Nevertheless, the suspense surrounding the case is maintained well, and each episode offers a few good plot twists. This way, Vigil could easily last for a few more seasons.
