From 2010 to 2015, Justified was a neo-western loosely based on the books by Elmore Leonard. The spin-off Justified; City Primeval takes Leonard's book City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit as a starting point. What is Justified: City Primeval about? In short: about nothing. Justified: CP looks like a modern city western in Detroit, with a cowboy marshall (Raylan Givens played by Timothy Olyphant), his hat, his daughter, a lawyer and some creeps & crooks. Following American custom, Justified: CP remains rather superficial in its storylines and focuses primarily on the cat and mouse game between Givens and Clement Mansell (Boyd Holbrook). Unfortunately without adding anything original. It doesn't get really exciting - let alone funny - anywhere. It is difficult to maintain attention.
The wooden acting of beautiful boy Olyphant is to blame for this. There is no father here in the first episodes, but an actor trying to play a father. Nevertheless, Justified: CP has its moments and can be worthwhile for fans of the six previous seasons of Justified. There are plenty of filmed books about detectives, daughters and lawyers thanks to the stories of Michael Connelly. Justified: CP has similarities with Bosch and its spin-offs. But that quality is not achieved anywhere.
