Zina plot

Amal, Lamya, Sofia, Nisrine and Samira are five friends of Moroccan-Dutch descent, who try to deal with their position between Moroccan culture and the Dutch polder reality, as well as their insatiable urge to become who they want to be. Amal seems to have her life on track: she has a job, a house and is about to marry the ideal son-in-law Younes. But all this makes her doubt all the expectations imposed on her by others and by herself. She may have ticked all the boxes on her list, but is she really happy?

Zina is a fresh and smooth Dutch drama series about five young Dutch-Moroccan women. With themes such as friendship, love, loneliness and identity, Zina balances between drama and comedy. Zina could have come straight from a Swedish series factory; airy but with sufficient weight. I also see references to series such as Plan Coeur, Crashing, I May Destroy You and of course Anne+.

It's nice to see these Mocro-Millennials navigating between the openness of Dutch culture and the Moroccan culture of their parents, where silence and denial predominate. Even better that this is (almost) not about the underworld, drugs and violence. The acting is excellent. Especially in Amal (Soumaya Ahouaoui) you see all doubts and cultural differences delicately emerge. So everything okay? Actually yes!
