Impressive Scandinavian miniseries, based on the bizarre true murder of journalist Kim Wall. The approach of director Tobias Lindholm is special: the perpetrator never comes into the picture and the series focuses exclusively on the technical investigation. Søren Malling is great as the head of the Copenhagen homicide department. The entire cast is top notch, by the way. Fantastically portrayed and often very moving. The emotional pressure on all those involved that the research entails is almost palpable.

Excellent Danish drama about the search for (evidence for the murder of) journalist Kim Wall, better known as the submarine case from 2017. The Investigation puts a respectful spin on the true crime genre. Where, for example, The Serpent, Mindhunter or Des mainly revolve around the motives and actions of the suspects, The Investigation sheds light on the role of the investigators and the impact on the victim's family in an almost clinical way. For example, the killer is not mentioned by name once and the screenplay and direction by Tobias Lindholm (Mindhunter) remain true to reality. In an almost documentary-like way. That reality is an in-depth look into the procedural quest for justice; find the submarine, collect physical evidence, analyze the fab suspect, and do a lot of waiting and calling; 'with Jens'. Strangely enough, after a hesitant start, it produces gripping and exciting television.
There's a great role for the driven, conscientious and aloof Søren Malling (which Danish series didn't he star in?) as Commissioner Jens Møller. And a convincing supporting role for Laura Christensen as Maibritt. Kim Wall's parents (played by veterans Rolf Lassgård and Pernilla August) also star in the Swedish-Danish sky above the blue-grey Sound. With the cooperation of the Wall family. It has been mentioned here a number of times: what is most striking about this series is that perpetrator and victim are never in the picture at any time. A raised middle finger to the 'true crime' genre? It is certainly striking, especially for a true crime series. I understand that you avoid cheap sensation with this, but for me it felt cramped every now and then. Was that really a conscious choice or was there a legal issue involved?
Can't immediately find anything about it online, but since the series was filmed very shortly after the events (first broadcast on Danish TV follows barely 3 years after the murder) I don't think the second hypothesis can be ruled out. What also struck me is that the victim's friend does not appear at any point in the series, unlike the parents who apparently collaborated on this series. Also the whole side plot with the daughter of the main research completely passed me by.
After all the positive reviews this was a disappointment for me. Unfortunately.
