The Ranch plot

A confident, semi-professional American football player returns home after a short career to run the family business in Colorado with his father, whom he hasn't seen for 15 years, and older brother. Their stubborn mother owns a bar and temporarily lives in a caravan behind the cafe while she reflects on her marriage.

Hyde en Kelso uit That 70s Show die gezellig de redneck uithangen: mij kun je er wel mee plezieren. Ja, het is een "ouderwetse" sitcom, lachband incluis. Maar dan wel eentje in het premiumsegment. De grappen zijn wat gewaagder dan gebruikelijk in het genre, de serieuze momenten zijn niet té melig (vaak een heikel punt) en de serie is overall heel sfeervol. Vooral dat laatste doet de serie boven de grijze brei uitsteken. Voor een keer speelt het verhaal zich niet af in New York of LA, maar op de boerenbuiten. De gezellige setting en weinig ambitieuze personages zorgen voor een relaxte mood. Kutcher en Masterson pikken de draad uit That 70s Show moeiteloos op en hebben nog steeds een geweldige chemie. Er duiken bovendien nog enkele acteurs van weleer op, onder meer Wilmer "Fez" Valderrama. En alsof dat nog niet genoeg roept Sam Elliots personage overduidelijk echo's op van Red Forman. Ik ga niet zover om dit het officieuze negende seizoen van That 70s Show te noemen, maar het is hoe dan ook een geslaagde reünie! 4*

Yes, it's an "old fashioned" sitcom, including laugh track. But one in the premium segment. The jokes are a bit more daring than usual in the genre, the serious moments are not too corny (often a tricky point) and the series is very atmospheric overall. Especially the latter makes the series stand out above the gray knit. For once, the story isn't set in New York or LA, but on the farmland. The cozy setting and unambitious characters create a relaxed mood.

Kutcher and Masterson pick up the thread from That 70s Show effortlessly and still have great chemistry. There are also some actors from the past, including Wilmer "Fez" Valderrama. And if that weren't enough, Sam Elliot's character clearly evokes echoes of Red Forman.

I wouldn't go so far as to call this the unofficial ninth season of That 70s Show, but it's a successful reunion either way! 4*
