The Last Kingdom plot

The year is 872 and many of the individual Kingdoms, what we now know as England, fell during the invasion of the Danes. The Kingdom of Wessex led by King Alfred is on its own. Against this turbulent background, we see a Saxon nobleman and his son Uhtred of Bebbanburg. The boy is captured by the Danes and raised as one of their own. Where does his loyalty lie? Is he a Saxon or a Dane? Will Uhtred choose his native land or those who raised him? To regain his birthright, Uhtred must walk a perilous path between the two sides and plays an important role in the birth of a new nation.

Vikings is a bit more in my style. That is a bit more brutal and violent, but this is certainly an excellent series. I am fascinated by history anyway and this is one of the toughest periods. A lot of poverty, a lot of violence,... You can die at any moment of a horrible disease or be smashed in the head by a highwayman or a Viking. Completed the first season, but I'm going to make time for the second as well.

Funnier than you might think. 'The Last Kingdom' is harsh, brutal, and cynical, but also incredibly witty. I really enjoyed the dark jokes about hypocritical churchmen and Vikings who disregard any religious morals. It also creates a nice inner conflict for main character Uthred (Alexander Dreymon), between his Saxon heritage and his Viking upbringing. The battles are epic and grand in scale. Beautiful atmospheric shots of England in the early Middle Ages. Although, I have to admit, the storylines in 'The Last Kingdom' move a bit too fast to truly resonate. For example, Uthred has no fewer than three love interests in just eight episodes. But given the high ratings, I'm optimistic that this series will develop positively in subsequent seasons.
