Derry Girls plot

Derry Girls is set in 1994 and that is a troubled time in Northern Ireland. Armed agents and army checkpoints are part of the daily life of 16-year-old Erin and her friends. Erin lives with her mother who tolerates no contradiction, her father and grandfather Joe who cares about his daughters and granddaughters, but less with his son-in-law. Although Northern Ireland is in the news every day, she has her own problems: she is terrible with boys and no one understands her. She also has to deal with her cousin Orla McCool who lives next door with her mother Sarah. Orla is quite unpredictable and lives in her own world. Her friend Clare is especially smart and ambitious, while Michelle is big-mouthed and wants a boyfriend. Michelle's nephew, James has just moved to Derry and is an outsider with an English accent, because of that accent he also has to go to girls' school because the boys' school would be too dangerous, but that turns out to be a disappointment.

What an overwhelming surprise this turns out to be, extremely fast tempo that fires one joke after another and almost always manages to shoot direct hits. Often politically incorrect, or just plain rude but almost always hilarious. Add to that the fact that the main characters are acting the stars of the roof (the "man" in the company is perhaps slightly less) and a series of great secondary characters are featured. The soundtrack is top notch (references to Tarantino followed by soundtrack Pulp Fiction and/or Reservoir Dogs is always nice).

In terms of comic series, it's just the funniest thing I've seen this season, it's just a shame that it's only 6 paltry episodes of a good twenty minutes, although it may well ensure that the series doesn't collapse anywhere.

5* anyway, and if I'm really crazy I might just throw something out of my top ten to make room for this, rarely laughed at such a pace.

Nice series, which is easy to watch, but varies in level. One episode is clearly more fun than the other, so you always have to wait and see what you get. But the cast is good, the soundtrack appropriate and fun and many of the jokes land. Siobhán McSweeney is a hit!

Nice ending too. Reminded - to a certain extent - of the end of the fourth season of Blackadder: there is nothing wrong with showing the harsh reality in a comedy series.
