Netflix's WWE Unreal has provided professional wrestling fans with an unprecedented insight into what goes on behind the scenes in the business.
Some of the more shocking revelations surround how storylines develop or, in some cases, are completely scrapped.
Here are some incredible storylines that nearly happened in WWE in 2025.
Kevin Owens nearly joined forces with The Rock/Cody Rhodes nearly joined forces with The Rock
At WWE Elimination Chamber, John Cena shocked the entertainment world when he turned heel (a villain) for the first time in over 20 years. Many wrestling fans never believed they would see a villainous version of the heroic character that Cena portrays, yet it happened, as he unceremoniously kicked Undisputed Champion Cody Rhodes in the groin to join forces with The Rock, currently playing a villainous, corporate version of his character.
The Rock was attempting to get Rhodes to turn into a bad guy.
WWE Unreal Episode Four confirmed that the company nearly went in two other directions.
One option would have seen The Rock call an impromptu match at the Elimination Chamber between Rhodes and a surprise challenger - Kevin Owens.
Owens would have defeated Rhodes to win the title and joined with the Rock.
The other option was for the original plan to go ahead - Rhodes sells his soul to The Rock and turns heel to take on babyface John Cena at WrestleMania.
Chelsea Green nearly won the Royal Rumble
Ahead of the 2025 Royal Rumble, WWE Creative wasn't sure who to name as winner.
One idea that was mulled over was an idea that has never happened before.
It would have seen two unnamed female wrestlers eliminate each other from the match BEFORE the number 20 entrant had even arrived in the ring. That number 20 entrant would have been Green, who would have been named as winner due to default.
In the end, the idea was scrapped and the returning Charlotte Flair won the Royal Rumble to earn a Championship match at Wrestlemania.
John Cena and CM Punk were considered to win the Royal Rumble
One of the most shocking Royal Rumble winners was Jey Uso, who went on to WrestleMania to defeat Gunther to become World Heavyweight Champion.
However, both Cena and CM Punk were strong contenders to win the match.
WWE Writer Michael Hayes explains why Uso was chosen:
“I think in the case of Jey Uso, when somebody catches fire, they just catch fire. And sometimes you have to alter all your plans. Who do we have on our roster that’s hot, that hopefully is maybe new and fresh, and all of a sudden, Jey Uso is checking all those boxes.”
