Hayden Christensen says he would be open to the prospect of starring in a Darth Vader spin-off series, with the actor set to appear as the Sith Lord again in the upcoming Disney+ release, Obi-Wan Kenobi.

In the mid-noughties, Christensen suddenly became one of the most famous actors in the world when he was cast to play Anakin Skywalker in the second two Star Wars prequels, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith.

The prequel trilogy, again developed by George Lucas, is generally considered to be a disappointment among Star Wars fanatics.

Though the majority of the blame for the lack of critical success is pointed at the script, Christensen was the target of criticism too for his portrayal of one of the most famous villains in movie history, albeit an early incarnation.

The stance on his portrayal has since softened among fans, and there was genuine excitement when it was announced he would be returning as Anakin Skywalker.

"It’s hugely meaningful to me," Christensen told Digital Spy when asked about the opportunity to return after the previous criticism.

"And the love and support that those films get now, is very heart-warming. So getting to come back to this character, and to sort of continue my journey with him, is just a very cool opportunity.

"We are going to get to see what it’s like to be Darth Vader at this point in his life, and what that experience is like for him. That’s something we haven’t seen yet. I think that’s really exciting.

Christensen reveals that the most challenging aspect of returning was getting to grips with the iconic Vader suit again.

"The challenging aspect of playing this character, ultimately, has to do with the physicality of being in the suit," he explained.

"That costume is obviously very iconic, and it’s been previously established. There’s a lot of continuity we need to adhere to, and how he moves, and all of that. So just trying to get that right, that was very important to all of us."

A Darth Vader spin-off series?

When asked about potentially appearing as Vader again, perhaps in another Star Wars spin-off series, Christensen was excited at the prospect.

"If the opportunity presents itself, I would be all for it," the 41-year-old responded.

"I think this is a character that is very complex, and there’s a lot there to further explore. If the powers that be were so inclined, I would be so excited to get to do so."

Obi-Wan Kenobi will star Ewan McGregor, who is also reprising his role from the prequel trilogy. The first two episodes of the series will be released on Disney+ on 27 May.
