During the Oscars ceremony last year, social media and news outlets went into a meltdown after Will Smith walked onto the stage and slapped Chris Rock across the face after the comedian made comments alluding to his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith's alopecia.

Smith won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in King Richard later that night but was subsequently given a 10-year ceremony ban due to his violent actions.

The actor himself has apologised for his actions, both to the public, his fellow actors and to Rock himself. But, these apologies didn't really go down too well with anyone, with Rock suggesting Smith looked like a "hostage" in his apology video.

One man who remains stunned at the incident is two-time Oscar winner Sean Penn, who has savaged the Academy for allowing the incident to happen while not allowing Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky to make a speech regarding the ongoing war with Russia.

“The Oscars producer thought, ‘Oh, he’s not light-hearted enough’. Well, guess what you got instead? Will Smith!” Penn told Variety.

“I don’t know Will Smith. I met him once

“He seemed very nice when I met him. He was so f–king good in King Richard So why the f–k did you just spit on yourself and everybody else with this stupid f–king thing?”

Penn has been known to be a bit of a Hollywood badboy over the years, as in 1987 he served 33 days in prison for punching and spitting on an extra on the set of Colors, while in 2010 he was ordered to undergo 300 hours of community service after attacking a photographer.

He reckons Smith should have also been arrested following the attack on Rock.

“Why did I go to f–king jail for what you just did? And you’re still sitting there?" he asked.

“Why are you guys standing and applauding his worst moment as a person?”

Smith is still plotting his Hollywood comeback after the incident. After starring in slavery drama Emancipation, he will soon feature in Bad Boys 4, while there are rumours of a sequel to I Am Legend.
