David Gordon Green took a different approach to his Exorcist movie than he took to his reboot of the Halloween franchise.

Over the years, Green has taken it upon himself to reinvigorate two of the most iconic horror franchises of all time. He started in 2018 with Halloween and followed that up with Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends.

He then took on an even bigger task - creating a new entry in the Exorcist series with The Exorcist: Believer.

It will act as a direct sequel to the original movie and sees Ellen Burstyn reprise her role as Regan's mother, while Leslie Odom Jr. and Ann Dowd have joined the main cast.

Even though Halloween and The Exorcist are both horror classics, Green knows it was necessary to treat the productions differently.

“The Halloween movies are in the slasher genre,” Green explained to Empire.

“They’re a place to play, and maybe have some campy fun. But this one was more researched and a bit academic. The narrative we were sculpting, and the relationships, were more dramatic. It’s a very different approach.

“We’re talking about the horror genre, but my main ambition was to preserve the dramatic integrity, and not lean into what’s evolved within the genre as a result of the original film.

“But that’s impossible: you have to acknowledge that there have been so many movies that are derivative copycats of The Exorcist. It has evolved as a concept, so making a slow-burn, dramatic, provocative, horrific film is different with today’s audience than it was 50 years ago.”

The Exorcist tells the story of a young girl, Regan, who is possessed by a demon and the impact the events have on her family as well as two priests who are recruited to help her.

Taylor Swift impacting The Exorcist: Believer

Unfortunately, movie and music fans aren't going to be granted their 'ExorSwift' dream this October.

Initially The Exorcist: Believer was set for release in cinemas on 13 October alongside the release of Taylor Swift's Eras Tour movie. Much like 'Barbenheimer', fans were looking forward to the double bill on the same day or the same weekend, but it won't be happening now as the upcoming Exorcist sequel has been moved forward a few days to avoid the clash.

Producer Jason Blum confirmed the release date on Twitter.
