Strangers Things co-creator Matt Duffer has revealed that the upcoming season four will feature more details about the past of the show's primary protagonist, Eleven, played by Millie Bobbie Brown.
When we first met Eleven back in season one, we witnessed a shy, haunted child who somehow gained supernatural powers. We now know that this was partly due to experimentation conducted at Hawkins National Library, but there are some questions that still need to be answered such as how she ended up there in the first place.
In Season four, Eleven is mourning the apparent death of her adopted father, police chief Hopper (David Harbour). She has moved to California, estranged from her friends at Hawkins.
Naturally, she will return to Hawkins at some point to be reunited with the gang, and of course take on a terrifying new threat.
But, Duffer has promised details on her past, too.
“Halfway through writing season one Netflix said, ‘Can you just explain the mythology to us?’” Duffer told NME.
“So we sat down with our writers and wrote this 25-page document and ever since we’ve been peeling back the layers of that.
“Because those answers lie in the past, some of them really go back to when Eleven was in Hawkins Lab and her storyline, so we really wanted to go back there and explore that.”
What is the villain in season three?
The 'Big Bad' of season three was a monster known as 'The Mind Flayer', who took the life of Max's brother Billy in the final battle at Starcourt.
The creature terrorising Hawkins this time around is a being known as 'Vecna', who was allegedly inspired by Pennywise from IT and Pinhead from Hellraiser.
“He’s slimy, he’s wet, he’s really bad – you don’t want to come across him in a dark alley," said Joe Keery, who plays Steve.
Stranger Things season four is released on Netflix on 27 May.
