One of the most anticipated comedies of 2025 is the sequel to This is Spinal Tap.

The 1984 classic is recognised as one of the best comedies of all time and the band is getting back together for This is Spinal Tap II: The End Continues.

All the crew are back for this one as Rob Reiner will direct and Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer and Michael McKeen are returning as Nigel Tufnel, David St.Hubbins and Derek Smalls, with all four contributing to the script.

Reiner says that the original plan for new material for Spinal Tap was to create a mock oral history, though those talks soon developed into ideas for a movie.

“It was going to be an oral history of the band,” he explained.

“For half we’d be in character, and talk about the band’s lives and how they came together and what they’ve been up to. In the other half we’d be ourselves and talk about the experience of making the film.”

The original film was entirely improvised and didn't have a script, and although that will be the case for the sequel, it has been reported that it will take inspiration from Martin Scorsese's documentary The Last Waltz about the Band's farewell gig at Winterland Ballroom.

“The idea is that the band hasn’t seen each other for 10 or 15 years and they come back for one more tour and one thing leads to another,” Renier continued.

The official synopsis reads:

'Set around forty years after the first film, film director Martin Di Bergi creates another video documentary of the reunion and final show of the legendary rock band Spinal Tap, consisting of Nigel Tufnel, David St. Hubbins, and Derek Smalls.'

The movie stars Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, Harry Shearer, Rob Reiner, Fran Drescher, Don Lake, John Michael Higgins, Jason Acuna, Nina Conti and Griffin Matthews among others.

Paul McCartney, Elton John, Garth Brooks, Questlove, Trisha Yearwood, Chad Smith, and Lars Ulrich have confirmed cameos.
