Rian Johnson still plans on making his own Star Wars trilogy just as soon as his schedule will allow.

In 2017, Johnson directed Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the second entry in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. It polarised fans, but was an enormous commercial success.

The plan was for him to direct three Star Wars movies, but he would be replaced by J.J. Abrams for The Rise of Skywalker.

At the moment, he is promoting Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, and he still has another entry in that franchise to make due to a massive deal with Netflix. Johnson wants to do his Star Wars trilogy but admits things are a bit uncertain currently.

“I have talked to Kathy about it and we’re still talking about it,” he told Variety.

“I had such an amazing experience making ‘The Last Jedi.’ It’s entirely a matter of scheduling. For me, putting this out and making the next one of these…the answer is I don’t know.”

Johnson still hugely proud of The Last Jedi

Some Star Wars fans were particularly unhappy with the portrayal of Luke Skywalker in The Last Jedi, while many claimed it took the franchise in an exciting, thoughtful new direction.

Johnson, naturally, is an avid defender of his movie, which sees Skywalker shutting himself off from the world after struggling to deal with his nephew Ben Solo's defection to the dark side.

“I’m even more proud of it five years on,” he told Empire.

“When I was up at bat, I really swung at the ball. I think it’s impossible for any of us to approach Star Wars without thinking about it as a myth that we were raised with, and how that myth, that story, baked itself into us and affected us.

"The ultimate intent was not to strip away – the intent was to get to the basic, fundamental power of myth. And ultimately I hope the film is an affirmation of the power of the myth of Star Wars in our lives.”
