A new series is being developed by HBO that will satirise the emergence of superhero movies within the film industry.
Titled The Franchise, it will focus on the black sheep movie of a cinematic universe and how the movie is made behind the scenes.
The official synopsis reads:
'The crew of an unloved franchise movie fight for their place in a savage and unruly cinematic universe. The Franchise shines a light on the secret chaos inside the world of superhero moviemaking, to ask the question — how exactly does the cinematic sausage get made? Because every f*ck-up has an origin story.'
Comic book adaptations and superhero movies are the dominant force in the movie industry at the moment, with dozens and dozens of features being produced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Extended Universe.
Three of the highest-grossing movies of all time - Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War and Spider-Man: No Way Home are Marvel properties that have been released within the past five years.
It was previously the case that they gave guaranteed box office numbers, but those numbers have dwindled on certain projects over the last couple of years like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Black Adam.
The Franchise is being developed by Job Brown (Succession), Armando Iannucci (Veep) and Sam Mendes (Skyfall, Spectre).
It stars Himesh Patel, Aya Cash, Jessica Hynes, Billy Magnussen, Lolly Adefope, Darren Goldstein, Isaac Powell, Richard E. Grant, and Daniel Bruhl.
