John McEnroe has slammed his portrayal in King Richard, calling the scene in which he features entirely inaccurate.

The four-time tennis grand slam winner is played by Christopher Wallinger in King Richard.

In the scene in question, McEnroe is practising with Pete Sampras and being coached by Paul Cohen before being approached by Richard Williams (Will Smith) who wishes to display the talents of his two daughters, Serena and Venus.

McEnroe dismisses the two young players and walks off, and the man himself insists that simply did not happen.

"When she was brought to the court I was practicing on, I was being told by my then-coach Paul Cohen and Richard Williams that her and Venus were going to be the two best players in the world," McEnroe revealed, as reported by the New York Post.

"It was like, 'Call me in 10 years, we'll see what's happening'.

"I didn't walk away in disgust, refuse to see Serena. I was there. Saw them. Why would I walk away after being told that I'm going to see two kids, 8 and 9, that are going to be future No. 1s? 

"I refuse to see these kids for what? Because I'm a hothead? Not correct."

Smith won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in King Richard. However, earlier in the ceremony, he made headlines around the world when he walked onto the stage and slapped Chris Rock.

After the comedian alluded to Jada Pinkett-Smith's alopecia, Smith struck the comedian before walking back and sending further warnings from his seat in the front row.

He was subsequently given a 10-year ceremony ban by the Academy.
