Matt Boone kills the cheater Bull Clark in self-defense during a poker game. He immediately leaves Waco, because he is not sure that he will get a fair trial. Matt joins Curly Ivers' outlaw gang, whose right-hand man Lou Garcia is a ruthless killer. After a bank robbery in Pecos, Matt is captured. Two of Waco's most prominent citizens, Richards and Farley, pay the Pecos sheriff the reward that was promised to bring Matt back to Waco. But the citizens of Waco have more faith in Matt as sheriff. However, righteous rancher Kathy Clark has a hard time accepting Matt as sheriff. The Texas Rangers capture Curley Ivers and his gang, with the exception of Lou Garcia, who has sworn to kill Matt before he is ever caught. Ivers warns Matt about Garcia. Matt accepts the job as sheriff and begins the hunt for Garcia.
