Henry Heath is a police officer in Salt Lake City in the year 1862. Heath feels responsible for the welfare of Jean Baptiste, a prisoner convicted of trespassing graves. At the same time, Heath despises his prisoner. Baptiste is banished to Antelope Island in Lake Salt Lake. No one is willing to take care of this prisoner, so Heath takes it upon himself to protect him in a hostile environment.
