If you set this director loose in Chicago you always get a solid thriller with an almost physical feeling for the locations, and with guns like Hackman and Jones you can hardly go wrong (especially in the reliable company of John Heard as the icy toling). There is nothing wrong with the individual scenes in this film, but the connection remains unclear to me for too long. Roger Ebert thinks it is a plus that this film does not underestimate the viewer and lets him solve the puzzle for himself piece by piece, but personally I didn't get enough grip on the plot to really get carried away, no matter how good the two protagonists are .

Nice action thriller. The plot is very transparent and not deep at all, but there is a lot of reasonably good action in the context of the end of the cold war. Should be seen in my opinion. I always think Hackman is good in these types of roles. Tommy Lee Jones doesn't get much screen time and I hardly find it worthy of the word "protagonist". Age says nothing about a film. It may be 30 years old, but I think it transcends many contemporary action films.

Nice to see Tommy Lee Jones and Gene Hackman at work in a Cold War conspiracy thriller. Tiny role for Pam Grier. There are plenty of nice locations to see, but the action, if there is any, is typically the cheaper type of 80's hustle and bustle work without it really being exciting. The film also feels a bit dated due to the A-Team-like music. What remains is a plot that seems a bit cumbersome. A lot of hassle to have a specific person carry out a specific assignment. In the end, it is also not credible that Dennis Franz still cooperates so actively. And the ending is quite anti-climactic, don't expect anything spectacular. For a thriller it just lacks suspense. Equally entertaining as a snack.
