When the Polish Michele Wolf miraculously comes out of a concentration camp alive, she finds her husband Stanislaus Pilgrin in the hands of a new lover. This lover turns out to be a daughter of Michele from a previous marriage. Because Michele's face has been made unrecognizable through plastic surgery, she is able to penetrate the lives of her daughter and husband undetected.
