Night Shift

The story follows Gwen Taylor on her first night shift at a remote motel, where she suspects she is being followed by a dangerous figure from her past. As the night progresses, she also begins to realize that the motel may be plagued by supernatural phenomena.

Despite the unexpected twist, I still felt something was missing in the film. The build-up is calm and well-executed. Gwen is given a tour of the motel, and it quickly becomes clear that this is not a 5-star stay. In fact, it probably wouldn't even get one star. The motel is full of vermin, the pool is out of order, lights are flickering, and the general condition is downright filthy. The atmosphere is set well right away, and it only becomes more oppressive once Gwen is left alone.

During her night shift, she encounters Alice, a girl with whom she has a strange first encounter. She also seems to see ghosts, but due to her lack of sleep, she doesn't know if they are real. As if that wasn't enough, a suspicious car drives past the motel every now and then. Gwen suspects that the driver might be the murderer who killed her family. All of these elements contribute to the growing fear she experiences.

After the twist, which I didn't see coming, the film turns into a slasher. Unfortunately, the tension that had been built up disappears and the whole thing becomes predictable. The kills are not explicitly shown and feel unoriginal. I did find the ending entertaining and Gwen even looked genuinely creepy at times.

Entertaining for once, but not a high flyer.
