Mystery noir in which the plot is ultimately driven by a MacGuffin. In this case, Mitchum is looking for the identity of Hitler's secret vassals. Anyway, the whole idea is fiction I thought. Since, as far as I know, Hitler never had any plans to conquer the USA. But of course it creates a conspiratorial feeling and involvement in the American viewer. The fight against Nazism was also fairly fresh in people's minds 11 years after the end of WWII. Four 'vassals' are also mentioned who historically effectively played a role in the run-up to and during World War II. The Netherlands is mentioned with Mussert (NSB) and Belgium with Léon Degrelle (Rex). Historically, these were not wealthy industrialists (such as the so-called secret vassals) but far-right (collaborationist) politicians. Mussert was executed after the war and Degrelle would live in exile for another 50 years, including in Franco's Spain.

But enough about politics. It is a good espionage thriller thanks to a Mitchum who feels like a fish in murky water, the beautiful photography on the European mainland (Nice, Vienna, Monaco, Stockholm) ... And there is also a nice intimate soundtrack that creates a kind of unrest: double bass riff , some percussion and a sporadic sax. The story has a open ending. And that is to be expected with intrigue at this level.
