Interesting theme that is worked out quite well in my opinion.

About a man who loses himself in his (victim) role and about the relativity of attractiveness.

Here and there a bit exaggerated, some nicely found mysticism (the flash entrance and intentions of his counter-character Oswald and the plot changes that are implemented in his story and role) but not so far that the film can't handle it. Appropriate settings, well acted with a beautiful and sincere role for Pearson too.

Interesting film that is not really easy to compare with other films. On IMDB I read a review that wrote that this is the male version of The Substance. In The Substance women have to rely mainly on their appearance but in this film men have to rely mainly on their personality. I think there is a lot of truth in that. This film makes that clear. A story that cannot really happen, very surreal and somewhat satirical. I did not find it really funny and I did not find it horror either. I found it mainly funny on a psychological level. It is more of a psychological drama. Recommended for the more serious film viewer with an open mind.

Edward [Sebastian Stan] undergoes an experimental medical treatment that cures him of the Proteus syndrome (colloquially known as Elephant Man Disease) that has been blocking his acting career. When his former neighbor Ingrid [Renate Reinsve] turns out to have written a play about her friendship with Edward, the now “cured” Edward auditions under a false name, wearing a mask of his old face. Ironically, the role of a lifetime (“I am Edward!”) is in danger of being lost due to the appearance of Oswald [Adam Pearson], an actor who (you guessed it) has Proteus syndrome. Schimberg’s camera direction is static, but his screenplay is cleverly constructed and Stan, Reinsve and Pearson are excellent.
