Mediocre film in which a ladies man falls in love for the first time and also with his boss. A clichéd rom-com that never really gets funny. Some entertaining scenes, but it could have been a bit shorter. Clearly a product of its time (clothing and music), which certainly has its charm.

“When I seduce you... if I decide to seduce you, don't worry. You'll know.”

Not bad. Eddie Murphy in a rom-com always provides entertaining material, and in Boomerang the man can once again show what charisma and screen presence he has. He carries this film effortlessly, but the script unfortunately falls short. The film's greatest strength is the interplay between Murphy and Halle Berry. You know how it ends, but the duo have a pleasant chemistry that makes them fun to watch. With Givens, Lawrence and Grier in somewhat meager, but adequate supporting roles. Also note the insane supporting role of Grace Jones.

Just okay.

Admittedly, Boomerang is not the most balanced film. There are quite a few twists and turns. For example, the interplay between Eddie Murphy and Halle Berry is nice, but the film does everything for at least half the time not to bring them together , something that eventually happens, albeit by somewhat shorter, faster consecutive scenes.

Nevertheless, it all still looks pretty good. I think Murphy is talented (although he doesn't use that talent more than he does). It is also striking that in 2018 so much hype was created about Black Panther and its predominantly dark cast, while a predominantly African-American cast was also allowed in 1992. Not that I care much - I'm not a big fan of quotas and imposed 'diversity', I just take it as it comes.

2.5
