“I wasn't worried about what would happen if I lived. I was worried about what would happen if I didn't.”

All the Bright Places deals with a number of serious themes such as coping with loss, life with bipolar disorder, childhood trauma and suicide, but there is also a clear Young Adult flavor to it. That is sometimes unpleasant, but the sincere and human moments dominate and ultimately last the most. This is also due to the acting of Elle Fanning and Smith. The locations, music and cinematography also create a nice atmosphere. The storyline surrounding Theodore and his sister (Shipp) could have been developed a bit better.

Psychodrama about two teenagers with a damaged past, who do their best in each other's company to get their lives back on track. A somewhat unbalanced film because the character of the young man hardly has any depth and is also poorly fleshed out by Justice Smith. I feel like a lot more could have been made of this story.

You healed me…

All the Bright Places is a nice intriguing concept with a lesser execution. The narrative is slow and not entirely convincing. Finch's suicide was somehow quite random. Yes, it was clear that he had mental issues, but there was no belief that he was suicidal. Little was discussed about his mental problems and much was left to interpretation. Because I what exactly were his father's dark moods? It could be a lot his suicide therefore felt quite forced.

Elle Fanning was strong and convincing in the role as Violet. Justice Smith, on the other hand, is a bit of a miscast... He is a fine actor, but his role was quite complex and I think that was a bit too ambitious for Smith. I missed his conviction as a “freak” a bit.
