Larry Elliot is a reporter at his uncle's newspaper who specializes in chess, but also has a penchant for sensational events. One day, Larry is assigned to do a report on a local wine festival. Meanwhile, Larry's colleagues deal with an escaped convict. However, Larry gets involved with this convict when he gets off at the wrong bus stop where someone has been killed by that escaped convict. Larry, however, becomes suspicious, flees and later, when he visits a local restaurant, he finds his girlfriend Sally Warren with a detective. In this restaurant, the owner shows two precious chess pieces with jewels, which attract a lot of attention from the public, but also from Larry and also from the escaped convict.
