Napoleon Bonaparte has just abdicated the throne of France and Italy and has been exiled to Elba, returning Louis XVIII to the throne. In the struggle between the Bonapartists and the royalists, Louis has ordered the execution of Napoleon's loyal soldiers, including Armand de Treville. However, Armand manages to escape just before he is executed. He takes refuge in the south of France in the castle of his girlfriend, the Countess Louise, who, despite being a royalist, is first and foremost a friend of Armand's. He is forced to work incognito as one of her servants. Although Louise is in love with Armand, he sees her more as a sister.
