Zeder plot

"One man's search for an ancient secret...and the dead will rise from their graves!"

Stefano, a young journalist, buys a second-hand typewriter and sees that it clearly reads text on the typewriter ribbon. He is able to decipher the text and thus discovers the story of one professor Paolo Zeder, who managed to bring the dead back to life in the 1950s. Stefano is fascinated by this story and asks some scientists to help him redo Zeder's experiments.

Zeder is indeed a "zombie film" that is different. No blood and guts as Italian colleagues often did, but rather atmospheric horror.
The story is very strong and the direction is also good. The ending where Stefano brings his girlfriend back to life is also very well found.

4*

Disappointment.

I expected a bit more from my first (and perhaps last) film by director Pupi Avati.

The film makes a restless impression with little foundation in the story. It is a jumpy whole that wanders uninspired from one scene to the next. Filmed rather hastily and lazily. At least that is how it came across.

Unlike his compatriots, he doesn't throw around gallons of blood and doesn't show minced meat. I don't really care, as long as he uses other elements that successfully generate horror or thrills. That's what you would expect anyway. It's an expectation that doesn't come true. Apart from being without shocking effects, the film is also without tension. How is that possible when the basis of the film is a story that has so much creepy potential. It is shocking!

What does succeed here and there is creating an atmosphere setting that is somewhat gloomy and mysterious. A crypt, a cemetery or a dimly lit space do wonders. And those wonders provide the only modest thrills.

The characters are not worth mentioning. Hollow and uninteresting. Anne Canovas is too, but her beautiful appearance at least somewhat alleviated the pain of dullness.

Despite this, the film remained a difficult birth.
