The build-up of this Australian genre film isn't all that bad. Director Jon Bell presents a decent idea and benefits from the energetic, strong lead performance of Shari Sebbens. The result is a film that employs a premise that is a little too familiar, yet operates mysteriously and, at times, atmospherically enough not to bore. The Moogai has all the accolades to be immediately panned by the seasoned horror fan, but Bell manages to present it intriguingly and loudly enough thanks to the enthusiastically portrayed lead roles. Towards the finale, however, all pretense falls apart and the subsequent showdown hangs together like loose sand, which even the best actors and/or actresses in the world cannot overcome. It could have been a bit more suspenseful, but The Moogai never gets boring.
