Nice horror movie. Michelle Rodriguez is always happy as a tough lady, but for me it's mostly the dogs that save the film. 3 stars

Wes Craven is a well-known name, who has left his mark on the horror genre with films such as The Hills Have Eyes, A Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream. With the Breed, his name is big above the title, but a closer look shows that this is more about namedropping than that Craven makes much of a substantial contribution to the film. Not much artistic contribution at least. On the other hand, he will probably have opened the money pouch substantially.

The director's name is Nick Mastandrea, who was Craven's assistant director for many years and is making his debut as a full-fledged director with this film. Craven probably did some protective actions here and there, so that the film is still somewhat watchable. The movie isn't very good.

The plot sounds like a standard plot from one of the countless animal horror movies from the 1970s. A group of twenty-somethings spend a few days in a cabin on a remote island. Soon they are attacked by aggressive dogs. That sounds pretty trite and in reality it is.

The film is predictable and has unintended humorous moments, which look quite sad. The characters are very cliché and hard to bear. They also bother you with spouting stupid lyrics that puts extra pressure on the tolerability. On the other hand, there are a few nice action scenes with the well-trained and terrifying dogs that ensure that the attention does not slacken too much.

And that's it.

Fantastic convincing acting by the dogs! Although the film is not really recommended for dog lovers. Human stuff is C-movie level and the looks are also all the cheap kind, story you don't have to stay up to, but thanks to the dogs absolutely convincing horror.
