Sl8n8 plot
Kristel Lodema (Victoria Koblenko) goes with four friends to an old Belgian coal mine to pick up the manuscript of Martin, her recently deceased father. As a criminologist, Martin investigated the serial killer Andries Martiens, who died a century ago as a 'fireman' in the mine. Firemen were death row inmates who were given their last chance in the mine. After a tour of the mine shafts with a small group of 'tourists', a therapist (Kürt Rogiers) and his patients, the group gets stuck in the mine labyrinth. Out of boredom and under the influence of XTC, some of Kristel's friends suggest the idea of having a séance with Kristel's father's Ouija board. What starts as a joke turns into a nightmare...

Very funny video.
We don't see these kinds of concepts very often in the Netherlands. Still very nice to see a Dutch Horror film once in a while. It's pretty fake and has some huge winks in it, but none the less it's still quite entertaining. In any case, the concept is genius.
And some nice pictures were shot underground as well.

Because you can never shake a camera enough.
A film with many flaws, but the camera work stands head and shoulders above the rest. They had probably heard that a more-handheld approach would provide some extra nervousness and tension, but that an approach alone is not enough, the makers have apparently escaped. Camera work really sucks and takes a lot of atmosphere out of the film.
The characters are the other big pain point. The one lolbroek in particular is a dramatic character, although there is actually no one in the entire group who comes across as a bit sympatic. As an apology Belgian, Rogiers also looks lousy. It's hard to support characters that you hope will die as soon as possible.
Too bad, because the setting is nice and the underlying legend, although a bit boring, is enough to set up a nice horror. The focus is also more on the tension than the underlying drama and there is even some funny gore left and right. Nothing to get very wild about it, but it does make the film live up a bit every now and then.
That's necessary, because otherwise the Sl8n8 lacks tension and drive, which makes it quite dull at times.

Nether horror.
Well, I secretly didn't think it was that bad. The horror hearts of van Geloven and Visser are clearly in the right place, but they don't really come into their own. This is partly due to the fact that Koblenko should not have been cast, because she cannot act.
For the rest it is quite a chaotic film, with a lot of energetic camera use. The cast again consists of the standard horror types, the joker, the virgin etc etc. Story itself is also not very original but here and there are some nice scenes.
The opening was nice and dark and in terms of gore and kills it is also ok. Somewhat messy and weak acting, but I had a good time. Great Dutch horror that is not that bad compared to other horror films.
