A horror film from 1980 with this name, it must be part of the notorious stream of so-called video nasties: extremely violent, cheaply made horror films that were mainly made for the then emerging video market. Maniac indeed falls into that maligned category and can therefore not be called a masterpiece. Despite the fact that this is a cheap production and that the film largely bounces from one victim to the next without too much suspense, this film is still worth watching for genre fans. This is due to the clever portrayal of Joe Spinell as the killer, who manages to convey some humanity despite the madness of his Maniac. Jay Chattaway's musical score is typical of the era, yet often quite effective. That's why this film is never boring and still great to sit through. A good introduction to video nasty genre.

Good film about a serial killer who scalps his female victims. A look into a sick mind. The film has a menacing atmosphere and is depressing in tone. A bit monotonous here and there. An excellent soundtrack and some gory make-up effects. Joe Spinell is convincing in the title role.

Joe Spinell stars as a homicidal maniac. One that can put on different faces. An awkward sit because the expected cop-bandit balance is completely missing here. As a viewer you are at the mercy of the figments of the brain of a sick person who cleans up a series of women. He comes across as very weird so that's actually done quite realistically. The opening is strong: the nightmare of the psychopath who wakes up drenched in sweat. And that is also a foreshadowing around which the storyline revolves. The inner struggle of Spinell that turns into a bloodbath every time. Two scenes that stand out for me is the strangling scene that goes on and on and the scene in the subway. The latter is a beautiful piece of suspense. Although beautiful may not be the word to use with this exploitation movie. Spinell looks mothballed in his role, and the whole film exudes an ultramarginal vibe. As a make-up man, Tom Savini was a real star in the horror scene of the 1980s and once again delivers class work here. It is not incomprehensible that this horror film had a difficult cinema release. A slasher classic from the golden age that in this case stands out for the lingering perspective of the killer. The killer is also just pathetic as a seriously ill person. In terms of atmosphere, the film fluctuates somewhere between exploitation and the psychological tour.
