Anyone who looks closely will undoubtedly think they recognize a message, but I can hardly escape the impression that Ortega made this only to shock. And of course he succeeds completely in that.

Somewhere admirable. There are few directors who don't care about making concessions and just push their own ideas. So Ortega deserves the credits.

But on the other hand it is also a bit simple. Scoring just by showing dirty scenes smells of laziness. Especially since he doesn't build anything around it.

2*

I really had to see this one and it completely lived up to expectations. Uncompromising horror, delicious gore, with that delicious nihilist sauce. This kind of cinema, I really have a soft spot for.

Not much more than a bunch of gore stuck together, with director Lex Ortega doing his utmost to outdo each scene with the next. Atroz is therefore definitely not a pleasant watch and contains a number of images that I absolutely could not have imagined in my darkest fantasies. The good thing is that the makers can handle practical effects well and have enough balls to work without limits, but that is about it. The acting is namely deplorable and the running time is far too long for this rather thin content. So much explicit violence gets boring after a while and the last half hour really tests your patience, but underneath the thick layer of horror and misanthropy there is a certain form of quality and talent. Hopefully Ortega will learn to direct his next projects a bit better, so that he can perhaps appeal to a larger audience.
