Tired of the cynical attitudes of his sister-in-law and her husband, the deaf-mute young Shanks seeks solace from an eccentric elderly scholar who moves into an immense residence outside the city. There he is offered work in a laboratory. He has to bring dead animals back to life via an ingenious device that is controlled remotely. When his elderly friend dies, he decides to continue the experiment on his corpse.
