Without Mark Rylance, this film adaptation of Roald Dahl's beloved book probably wouldn't even have the level of Steven Spielbergs Tintin-fiasco. BFG does show unpleasant similarities with that film, with the excessively elegant camerawork and a moderate use of CGI. Ruby Barnhill portrays main character Sophie as a somewhat dowdy, know-it-all orphan girl and therefore does not come across too sympathetic. But despite the use of motion-capture, Mark Rylance manages to portray the Big Friendly Giant as fans of the book know him, with all the human qualities and shortcomings that make this giant so beloved.

A fun and sweet film, somewhat basic in terms of plot and with a very simple climax, but with a lot of attention to atmosphere and detail. Ruby Barnhill wasn't all that special to me, Mark Rylance, on the other hand, totally carried me away with that sad look in his eyes – I thought he was the most important asset of the entire film. And am I the only one who thought I recognized Daniel Craig's face in the Bloodbottler? Too bad about the sentimental stuff with those dreams, but otherwise quite successful.
