Apenstreken plot

Nine-year-old Wim dreams of going to school. But he lives in the orphanage. Together with the other children of the orphanage, he is exploited and has to work hard every day in the illegal broom factory in the basement of the orphanage. The children are anxiously awaiting the introduction of the School Act, which obliges children aged six to twelve to attend school. When Wim manages to escape, Jet ensures that he can hide on their farm. It is the start of a race against time full of exciting adventures, mischief and new friendships, in which Wim has to stay out of the hands of the director of the orphanage.

In the past it has been proven that such films can be quite nice, Pietje Bell for example is the most visited (Dutch) children's film in the cinema to date....if I'm correct.

But I liked this film a lot less....I especially found the accent with the soft g terrible and it doesn't do the film any good.

Also the acting of the children is just below par.......locations and atmosphere are nice but the rest is just very disappointing.

Too bad.

I saw this movie in the cinema (3D) with my husband and child (7 years old). We all thought it was a nice/beautiful movie. Because of the 3D effects it had that little bit extra. Very suitable as a family movie.

Ten-year-old Wim [Tygo Bussemakers] lives in an orphanage where Delphine [Martine Sandifort] exploits the children to such an extent that they have to beg for food and drink on the streets. But it is the end of 1899 and the Dutch government has serious plans for compulsory education for all children aged 6 to 12. Wim is desperate to go to school, but Delphine has hidden his birth certificate. Jet [Mees Smits] devises a way for Wim to unknowingly attend Miss Maria's [Yvon Jaspers] lessons and keeps Wim hidden in the stable on the farm. Together with her brother Gijs [Lars Heckens], Wim learns what farm life is all about. The opening scenes show some of the darker sides of life around 1900, but Nijenhuis cannot resist the temptation to romanticize the whole thing with pretty, romantic images. The title refers to a monkey that is only there to increase the cuddly factor of this poorly acted family film. It doesn't help that Nijenhuis portrays almost every adult character as a caricature, but of course you shouldn't turn to him for depth.
