Winter '89 plot
It is New Year's Eve 1989. Maria lives with her teenage daughter in Rotterdam and is getting ready for a party with friends. Then the bell rings and her ex-husband Karol is on the doorstep. He fled the communist regime in his homeland, but is not exactly welcomed with open arms by his ex-wife and daughter. In a flashback, the film shows how the brash Maria and the serious Karol first meet at a party in an Eastern European country. Karol turns out to be a secret agent who infiltrates intellectual circles in search of 'the enemies of the regime'. At first, the progressive Maria is at peace with that, but gradually she starts to have doubts
