The Russian nobleman, Prince Dmitri Nekhlyudov (Fredric March), is a young soldier when he seduces a maid, Katusha Maslova (Anna Sten), and then leaves her. Years later, after rising to the peerage, Nekhlyudov sits on the jury of the trial where the same maid is charged with murder. When he discovers that he himself is responsible for her downfall, he sets out to save her from deportation to Siberia.
