The relative tranquility of a model town, built entirely around a shoe factory (Bata), comes to an abrupt end when a hermaphroditic corpse is found on the factory complex. The general idea is that anti-capitalists are behind this to discredit the factory. However, the wife of the director, also head of the infirmary, wants to know more and starts an investigation. It results in a gripping drama about traditional thinking versus being different with a beautiful leading role by Eliška Křenková as the heavily pregnant wife of the director.

In 1937, Alois Haupt [Miloslav Köning] is director of a factory that would like to expand, but needs permission from “the big boss” [Ladislav Hampl]. He tries to handle the discovery of the body of an hermaphroditic baby on the factory grounds discreetly with the help of Róbert [Milan Ondrik]. His heavily pregnant wife Helena [Eliska Krenková], who attended but did not complete medical training, does further research with the help of doctor Kubák and discovers that it is quite possible that this baby was born by a hermaphrodite who works at the factory. She wants to help the person in question, her husband prefers to work outside. A compassionate drama about an underexposed aspect of the social discussion about genders and very convincing from both a scientific and religious point of view. Hauptová is excellent, but the film is a bit flat dramatically.
