Under the Lash plot
Deborah, the second wife of the intolerant and narrow-minded farmer Simeon Krillet, learns kindness for the first time from the Englishman Robert Waring. He goes to study agriculture with her husband. When her husband threatens to beat her for reading one of the Englishman's books, Deborah tells him, to save him from the young man's wrath, that she will become a mother.
