The Wolf plot
American overseer William MacDonald comes to a village in Ojibway in northwestern Canada. He seduces half-breed Annette while her betrothed Baptiste and half-brother Jules Beaubien are on a trapping expedition. After his work is over, MacDonald rejects Annette and leaves. When she realizes she is pregnant, Annette deliriously wanders into the woods and is devoured by wolves. On his return, Jules persuades Baptiste to let him avenge Annette's death. Jules and Baptiste go to the cabin of Andrew MacTavish, a miserable, self-exiled Scotsman who constantly berates his daughter Hilda, whom Jules loves, because her mother left him years before.
